周范 Zhou Fan

Zhou Fan was born in 1983 in Shanxi Province in northern China. In late 2007, Zhou Fan was selected as one of the top 25 emerging Chinese artists at the Chinese Art Prize. Zhou Fan was given the “special mention” prize, which had never been awarded before. The Chinese Art Prize launched Zhou Fan’s career, and allowed him to gain much more exposure. He said:

“A series of my paintings is based on dreams that I had as a child of many many jellyfish floating in the sky, some of which fell to the ground on parachures and became mushrooms. These dreams had a strong impact on me, and I remember them vividly. Somehow I feel that it is easier to focus on dreams than reality.”

The InterView vol.38: Lei Lei

Lei Lei is a rising new-generation animation artist with his hands on graphic design, illustration, short cartoon, graffiti and hip-hop music, and in 2005 he founded design group “Raydesign Studio” when still in Tsinghua University. He now is also one of the members of hip-hop band HEY!!!. You can see more works on his website.

华子 Wang Lihua

Wang Lihua, born in 1982 in Shandong, graduated from Photography Department at CAFA. He now lives and works in Beijing. Many people said it was not easy to shoot Beijing, though I think they were talking about Daido style photography. Because there is few skyscrapers in Bejing,  you should shoot the city in another style. Lihua’s photo is one special style catching the charactics of Beijing -  broad, slow, easy-going and unfashionable.

Li Zhe

Li Zhe (also know as whampower) was born in Oct. 1982 in Haikou, Hainan Province. He now lives in Guangzhou. Over two years ago, he began to photography under the influence of Huang Jing, another photographer based in Guangzhou. These works are from his “Casuarina Equisetifolia” series. You can see more works on his website.

In the framework of the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relationship  between Switzerland and the People’s Republic of China, the Embassy of Switzerland in Beijing initiated a photography project between the two countries. Chinese photographer Zhu Yinghao and Swiss photographer Petri de Pità were asked to portray the life of 60-year-old Chinese and Swiss citizens under the theme “Happiness”.  Two photographers went to each other’s country finishing the project in 15 days along with 30 60-year-old people in total.  The result is that we see more relations between “people” than the relations between two “countries”. Though the “happiness” is a kind of appearance, it is also a part of the fact. The exhibition opened on Sep. 14th, and will last to Sep. 28th at M.R. Gallery, 798 art district, Beijing. If you are in Beijing, do not miss it.

The InterView vol.35: Zhang Mengxi

Zhang Mengxi was born in 1989 in Beijing, and raised up in Hainan Province. She moved to Guangzhou with her family after primary school. Just like many young people in China, Mengxi was send to UK to study by her parents when she was  just a high school student. She now is studying Fine Arts in Central Saint Martins College of Art & Design, though her interest is almost on photography.

In addition, you may have found  the difference of Jia Za Zhi in recent days: we added a new column “Zine House“, which would introduce more beautiful little zines and books on the planet, even doing interviews with the publishers; we renewed the “INTERVIEW” column with a new name as “The InterView”, and designed cover for every article. We will also make the interviews into paper booklets, limitedly published. If you follow us by READER, please come in today, telling us your feelings on Jia Za Zhi’s new layout.

Interview with photographer Chen Yin

Chen Yin was born in Guangzhou in Nov.1983. He now works as a freelance photographer in Guangzhou. He pays his attention on documentary photography. JIAZAZHI invited him to talk about his new works on a pulled down street called Enning Road in Guangzhou, as well as his recent condition. We are sorry that the interview is only in Chinese version.
