Charlie Crane

These images are selected from British photographer Charlie Crane‘s “Welcome to Pyongyang” project.

The InterView vol.35: Zhang Mengxi

Zhang Mengxi was born in 1989 in Beijing, and raised up in Hainan Province. She moved to Guangzhou with her family after primary school. Just like many young people in China, Mengxi was send to UK to study by her parents when she was  just a high school student. She now is studying Fine Arts in Central Saint Martins College of Art & Design, though her interest is almost on photography.

In addition, you may have found  the difference of Jia Za Zhi in recent days: we added a new column “Zine House“, which would introduce more beautiful little zines and books on the planet, even doing interviews with the publishers; we renewed the “INTERVIEW” column with a new name as “The InterView”, and designed cover for every article. We will also make the interviews into paper booklets, limitedly published. If you follow us by READER, please come in today, telling us your feelings on Jia Za Zhi’s new layout.

Ian Teh

Ian Teh is a photographer based in London. Much of his artistic creativity stems from his interests in social, environmental and political issues. He imagine his work as a series of short films made out of stills. They are narratives that are built on moments of time collected over extended periods. Each story is a woven fabric of compositional and colour threads that come together to create a particular ambience intended to both emphasize his perspective on the subject matter and to, hopefully, encourage the viewer to take the narrative beyond the limits of the frame, into a direction that makes the experience of those images more vivid. His photographs have been widely exhibited and featured in several international publications such as, Time, Newsweek, The New Yorker and The Independent Magazine.

These works are from his Merging Boundaries seires. This is a journey, a 1000 kilometre road-trip, made several times along the frontiers of Russia and North Korea on the Chinese borer. It is a region that has been designated as a special economic zone, designed to foster relationships and cross-border trade in a mood of economic cooperation between these neighbouring countries who once considered themselves as the bastions of Communism. From the hustle and bustle of the Chinese markets catering to Russian tourists and entrepreneurs to the deadly quiet Chinese towns near the North Koea border, this work is an exploration of the surreal lives that exist in these artificial places, special economic zones that have been created by governmental madates.
