Ian Teh

Ian Teh is a photographer based in London. Much of his artistic creativity stems from his interests in social, environmental and political issues. He imagine his work as a series of short films made out of stills. They are narratives that are built on moments of time collected over extended periods. Each story is a woven fabric of compositional and colour threads that come together to create a particular ambience intended to both emphasize his perspective on the subject matter and to, hopefully, encourage the viewer to take the narrative beyond the limits of the frame, into a direction that makes the experience of those images more vivid. His photographs have been widely exhibited and featured in several international publications such as, Time, Newsweek, The New Yorker and The Independent Magazine.

These works are from his Merging Boundaries seires. This is a journey, a 1000 kilometre road-trip, made several times along the frontiers of Russia and North Korea on the Chinese borer. It is a region that has been designated as a special economic zone, designed to foster relationships and cross-border trade in a mood of economic cooperation between these neighbouring countries who once considered themselves as the bastions of Communism. From the hustle and bustle of the Chinese markets catering to Russian tourists and entrepreneurs to the deadly quiet Chinese towns near the North Koea border, this work is an exploration of the surreal lives that exist in these artificial places, special economic zones that have been created by governmental madates.

Javier Izquierdo Jaume / Interview with photographer Javier Izquierdo Jaume

Javier Izquierdo Jaume
was born and brought up in Palma de Mallorca, Spain. He started to take photos 13 years ago. His works are always full of narrative. Every series is like a story, seemingly ordinary but with great passion. I was moved by his “Francisca Femenias, Death after life” series, a long series before one person’s death. Let’s see the works and the interview after the works.

Interview with photographer Xiong Xiaomo

Photographer Xiong Xiaomo was born in 1982 in Shanghai. He now works and lives in Shanghai, and currently serves as iPhone editorial director in Modern Weekly. If you are interested in his works, you can see more on his blog. You can also send a mail directly to  unseendesire@gmail.com.

Jasper James

Over the past decade Jasper James has lived and worked in New York, London and Beijing. He saw many landscapes of big cities in the world and has lots of words to say, resulting in the “People and Places” series. I wrote to him asking what’s the idea of this series. Here is the answer by him:
I was visiting a number of big Cities such as Tokyo, Beijing, Shanghai and always tried to get as high up in the city as possible to give me an overview and a sense of scale to the size of the City. I thought by combining the individual and the cityscape in one shot it would be interesting visually and also in a very open way the two would then play off each other. I find big cities fascinating, with the huge number of people going about their lives, all the different stories, hopes and dreams, but we can only connect personally with a tiny number of people, on most levels we are all strangers. I tried a few ways of actually making the images, but it was basically trial and error until I got the results that you see.
