Zhou Fan was born in 1983 in Shanxi Province in northern China. In late 2007, Zhou Fan was selected as one of the top 25 emerging Chinese artists at the Chinese Art Prize. Zhou Fan was given the “special mention” prize, which had never been awarded before. The Chinese Art Prize launched Zhou Fan’s career, and allowed him to gain much more exposure. He said:

“A series of my paintings is based on dreams that I had as a child of many many jellyfish floating in the sky, some of which fell to the ground on parachures and became mushrooms. These dreams had a strong impact on me, and I remember them vividly. Somehow I feel that it is easier to focus on dreams than reality.”

“Having moved around frequently growing up, I use the suburban home – like those reminiscent of my childhood – as an idealistic icon of the American Dream. By simplifying the structure of a house to a basic form, I explore the traditional ideas we attach to home ownership as well as what these buildings evoke for us: personal goals, economic issues, urban planning, and environmental concerns. I work in a variety of artistic media to investigate the love-hate relationship I have with these houses and the sprawling communities they create.”

If you are a long-time reader of Jia Za Zhi, you might have seen his works in one of our posts in August.

Cameron Platter was born in 1978 in Johannesburg, South Africa. He now lives and works outside SA’s third largest city, Durban. Besides drawing, he also involved in installation. Quite different from other artists in South Africa who concerned more about race, violence, and the effects of apartheid, he pays more attention on private issue, such as how sex is perceived, and how it has changed in democracy. In the dialogue, Cameron talks about the art situation in South Africa, his new painting series Hard Times/Great Expectations, and his new plans as well. The images of this article were selected from the new series.

Nasty Secrets and Dirty Tricks

When did you get interested in art? How did you start?
It was become an artist, or run a high- class escort agency, or become a politician. Art won, though I’m thinking it’s never too late to get into either of my two other options.
I started making art seriously after working as a night cleaner in a kitchen, and realizing that I’d rather be doing something that didn’t involve mopping floors, taking out trash, and cleaning grease off grills at 3 a.m. every morning.

What’s your comments on South Africa and the city you live?
South Africa is an emerging nation, and Africa’s USA: the ultimate throw-away- consumer society; depoliticized, and hooked on bad credit, cellphones, fast food, and blinged- up kwaito stars and celebs. Things are chaotic, wild, lawless and always in flux- so a great place to make art in and about.
You can go to an herbalist doctor who will make your penis bigger, give you eternal happiness, and bring back your lost lover, guaranteed, or your money back. (Within three days.) Afterwards you could pop into the trial of our former chief of police (and head of Interpol) who was recently convicted for corruption, and sentenced to 15 years in jail.
I live outside SA’s third largest city, Durban- a gritty, industrial port city that is in the process of slowing decaying and returning to the wilds of the sub- tropics. Think Detroit, except very hot, with palm trees and hindu temples (and now a big, shiny, debt- laden football stadium.)
I wouldn’t live anywhere else…

Speaking of “master”, who will you instantly think of? please give your comments on him/her?
Silvio Berlusconi. You’re the richest man in the country, you are the prime minister, you can change the law anytime to suit yourself, you get “massages” from young women in jacuzzis, you control and own the media, you have a permanent tan and hair, and you can sing. What more do you want?

Let’s talk about your art, why your art full of the metaphor of sex?
Sex (or more precisely, pornography) is my metaphor for where South Africa (and possibly the world) is at. We’re concerned about the business and the face value of fucking, and not about the politics of making love.
I do enjoy being deviant, and making people sit up and think through the use of porn, although porn isn’t nearly as bad as CNN, fast food, advertising, and shouldn’t really be that surprising and shocking to people.
Also, South African art, for the world, has always been about documenting race, violence, and the effects of apartheid. It’s interesting to see how sex, and how it is perceived, has changed in democracy. Sex is about being tolerant, and open to new things.

Could you choose one series of your works and talk about the ideas on it?
The series of new drawings, collectively titled Hard Times/ Great Expectations that were shown on my recent exhibition of the same title, earlier this year at whatiftheworld gallery in Cape Town.
They are all large scale (+-170cm x 170cm), hand coloured, with pencil crayon on paper. Each drawing takes about a month to complete, and were made in the sub tropical heat of my studio, with mosquitoes everywhere and me only in my underwear.
In I love Durban, I’ve taken existing buildings, signs, and businesses and collaged them into an experience I would see driving through neoned- up downtown Durban at night. Prince Barrack Hussein is my making bigger and more colourful actual pamphlets one is given on the street, of so-called doctors and professors who promise to remedy all ills. For me it’s about our society’s social maladies. In the Beginning Things were Good is about things falling apart and being able to revel in the perverse hilarity of the situation. Destitute is taken from a sign of real life homeless person, Wayne, the sign-maker, makes incredible glittered signs asking for donations. My version is about how I’m in a similar situation as an artist. Even though these works get shown in beautiful, high-end, galleries, and have price tags; I am one step away from being on that street corner, hussling for a dollar. Nasty Secrets and Dirty Tricks is a self portrait, my crocodile private-investigator alter-ego who is undercover in a downtown S&M club.
They are my way of documenting a contemporary South African experience- a form of reportage, where I can give my side of the story through the telling of simple stories drawn and appropriated from the media, TV, films, art, history, pornography, battle scenes, downtown-cityscapes, politics, music, and religion. They also act as “storyboards” for my films.

What’s your new plan?
I have recently had a baby daughter and built a house, so I’ve been super occupied. I’m looking forward to taking some time to think about new works. I’m beginning to get busy on a major video project, ambitious in scope and length, to be screened in real life locations (bars, cinemas, strip clubs, the bush, and the internet) around the world. Content includes a full- length film-noir, dance montages, performance, and a contemporary take on the assassination of Shaka.
In between that, I have a show with my Vienna gallery; a solo exhibition in Johannesburg, and my works go on show at MoMA NY (Museum of Modern Art New York) in March next year.
Then China?
