Matthieu Belin

Matthieu Belin is a professional photographer based in Shanghai, with 10 years background of art direction, specialized in fashion, documentary, portrait, architecture and art. These works are from his early works Chinese Portrait series. Here are his words on photography and this series.

Working with images echoes my desire to understand the world around me and its people. Each element is essential in the process of capturing photos as an art form, playing with the interdependence of light, time and contemplation. Exploring consciousness through the eye of possibility, I am unendingly fascinated by the mysteries of form and the surprising secrets they can unveil.

These photos were taken in different time during my five years in china. Here, I felt no oppression but a warm, human presence. One was still able to share the street with neighbours, the outdoor barber, a game of chess, skaters and people fishing on the frozen lake. All scenes of instant poetry.

I have accepted Yuan Di’s proposal of writting in Jia Za Zhi for a long time, but I’m really sorry that I didn’t start the project for my laziness. This is an old article about my Coastline series. It is a start. Please wait for my future post.

Kazuhiro Kitahara

Kazuhiro Kitahara was born in 1976 in Akashi, Hyogo, Japan, majoring in photography in Visual Arts Special School. He studied under a respected photographer Yoshihiko Ueda. He now works as a freelance photographer. In this”Utsutsuke”series, one dancer lives in the white (means light place), and the other exits in the black (means underground). Zhang Kai (KATSUMIX)

Zhang Kai (KATSUMIX) was born on Oct.10 1982 in Chongqing, China. He has been photographing since 2007. As a freelance photographer named by himself, he just wanders his city with a camera, shooting everything attractive without incomes. The first time I saw his work was one of his albums in Douban(a famous online community in China) named as PROVOKE. I once thought it as the content of PROVOKE magazine created by Nakahira Takuma, Takanashi Yutaka and other fellows in 1968. Actually, it was an experimental collective project initiated by Zhang Kai in Chongqing. The album contained the works from their first meeting. Then, I found one of his albums in flickr named as RECORD, which reminded me of Daido Moriyama. The above are all my impression of him, however, his reply is much more out of my imagination.
