InterView vol.41

Hua (Phoebe) Jin‘s photography is silent, which is in accordance with one of her favorite words by Roland Barthes, “The photograph must be silent : this is not a question of discretion, but of music.” For us viewers, her photography has a sense of alienation, bringing us an illusion of a different world. For herself, photography is more like a ligament between her inner world and the real world, though not always being strong, reminding herself not going too far away from the world. She likes to test her relationship and distance with the world, including her new project “Postcards Exchange”, in which she found that the distance between each one was not as far as we thought. In the InterView, Jia Za Zhi invited her to talk about the beginning of her photography, her experience of studying in Canada, and background stories of her two representive works.

InterView vol.40

Andrés Medina
was born in Madrid in 1978. He works as art director at an advertising agency in Madrid, Spain. In his work he only uses analog cameras, mostly medium format. Andrés taught himself to use these cameras and measure the light, asking other photographers and seeing the work of the ‘great photographers’ in books and internet. He likes to capture special moments in his life and his aim is to keep them alive and safe in his photographic memory. He tries to convey a sense of emotion within every photograph he makes. In general he seeks out places which you wouldn’t usually expect to be photographed. Most of his works are empty lens, and what we want to recommend is his night landscape works. In this interview, we choose two series from him.

Lucas Foglia

Lucas Foglia (b. 1983) was raised on a small family farm in Long Island and is currently based in New York and San Francisco.  These photos are selected from his “Re-Wilding” project.  “Since 2006 I have traveled throughout the southeastern United States, befriending, photographing, and interviewing a network of people who left cities and suburbs to live off the grid. Motivated by environmental concerns, religious beliefs, or predictions of economic collapse, my subjects build their homes from local materials, obtain their water from nearby springs, and hunt, gather, or grow their own food. ”

周范 Zhou Fan

Zhou Fan was born in 1983 in Shanxi Province in northern China. In late 2007, Zhou Fan was selected as one of the top 25 emerging Chinese artists at the Chinese Art Prize. Zhou Fan was given the “special mention” prize, which had never been awarded before. The Chinese Art Prize launched Zhou Fan’s career, and allowed him to gain much more exposure. He said:

“A series of my paintings is based on dreams that I had as a child of many many jellyfish floating in the sky, some of which fell to the ground on parachures and became mushrooms. These dreams had a strong impact on me, and I remember them vividly. Somehow I feel that it is easier to focus on dreams than reality.”

Lisa Dahl

Lisa Dahl

Lisa Dahl is a mixed-media artist who works in painting, photography, installation and video. Born in Minneapolis, Dahl has lived in half a dozen different States, and currently lives and works in New York City. According to her works, she said:

“Having moved around frequently growing up, I use the suburban home – like those reminiscent of my childhood – as an idealistic icon of the American Dream. By simplifying the structure of a house to a basic form, I explore the traditional ideas we attach to home ownership as well as what these buildings evoke for us: personal goals, economic issues, urban planning, and environmental concerns. I work in a variety of artistic media to investigate the love-hate relationship I have with these houses and the sprawling communities they create.”
