Brought up in Beijing, Zhe Chen is a photo-based artist now living in Los Angeles. In the past 3 years Zhe has been documenting her self-inflicted activities while creating a series of projects focusing on body modification, human hair, post-traumatic stress disorder, identity confusion and memory. Zhe is currently studying at Art Center College of Design, Pasadena, CA. You can go to her website for more works. After the images you will find a statement about this series.

Statement
By documenting the wounds which were either left-over from the artist’s childhood or done intentionally by herself, Zhe Chen externalized the otherwise unspeakable, internal sufferings into a tangible form of artwork via photography. Photographs from The Bearable not only function as a force to make the artist confront the past (as evidence they are so unavoidable) and accept the present (that Zhe’s still trapped in this post-traumatic stress disorder), but also offer her an opportunity of possession. In the progress of making them, the artist’s mental and physical injury were fetishized. Through the exhibition of them, the photographs transform the illness (now fetishism) into palpable, effable objects. Ultimately, in the possession of these photographs which revive the artist’s undesirable childhood, Zhe becomes capable of objectifying the pains and hence depersonalizing the trauma. In a sense, just as Deleuze once stated, “Making art becomes a process of healing.”

Bees by Zhe Chen for sale [...]
