Matilde Soligno / Interview with Matilde Soligno

- Luigi Ghirri。

Matilde Soligno was born on May 14, 1980 in Bologna, Italy. The last few years she has spent long periods of time in New York. She was busy on her exhibition in New York when she answered these questions. Though, her answers are provoking.

1, Special Explanation
Fake-  When we abstract ourselves from common-sense reality, our certainties appear to be untrue, and we start asking ourselves where the ultimate truth lies.

Photography- Stands for something we believe has existed. An open field we fill with ourselves, and still escapes us.

Poetry- The practice of using unexpected, problem-posing metaphors to describe the world.

Love- Shelter and recognition. Feeling a mostly unexplicable connection.

Memory- “Our memory is what we are”, by Eric Kandel, neuroscientist. Our unique physical features create our own personality’s features, but the contrary as well. A horizon of fascinating mysteries.

Light- Apparently related to time, space and every single thing as we know it.

2, Q&A
- When did you get interested in photography? How did you start?
- I started as a little girl, when my parents bought me my first camera. I remember considering my filmrolls the most precious and emotion-carrying objects in my possession. My father used to have all these interesting optical instruments, such as binoculars, and a reflex camera which I later obtained to use. My family used to get stressed out  and pick on me, since it used to take me a long time to decide how to shoot even the simplest souvenir picture during our frequent trips. When I was 19 people started encouraging me to take my photography seriously, and that can be considered as a second important step.

- Speaking of “master”, who will you instantly think of? please give your comments on him/her in one sentence?
- Luigi Ghirri. He was able to consciously express deep abstract thoughts, mostly about images and meaning attribution, through a life-like and evocative representation of certain everyday objects, situations or atmospheres.

- What give you inspiration recently?
- Challenges always inspire me. Leaving known territories and heading to new ones, as in travelling; getting frustrated and learning there’s an unexpected richness in letting go; finding out there is more than what I thought to things I was about to abandon for good.

- Are there any things or affairs make you feel terrified?
- Illusions. Hidden things. Things I can’t see. Things beyond my control. Enormous natural phenomena. Death. Those same things make me feel ecstatic, fascinated, or thrilled.
